HCN reports; announces expansion

Health Care REIT, Inc. (HCN), one of the portfolio stocks, released earnings for the quarter ending December 31. Revenue came in at $407.4 million beating expectations of $388.7 million and trounced the prior-year’s quarter of $191.6 million.

Earnings, however, were a disappointment. EPS came in at $0.22. Analysts had expected $0.27.

Also HCN and Chartwell Seniors Housing Real Estate Investment Trust agreed to buy 42 senior-housing in Canada for $925.2 million.

The deal is expected to be completed in the second quarter and will immediately add to HCN’s funds from operations. You can read the whole story from Bloomberg here.

REIT portfolio beating S&P 500 9:1!

Here is the e-FinancialWriter REIT portfolio for the week ending February 17, 2012.  As you can see, the average 12-month return for the REITs held in the portfolio was 12.84% vs. 1.36% for the S&P 500. Once again proving that despite the naysayers, real estate should be part of any well-diversified portfolio.
